The Acting Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has nominated Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang to temporarily assume the role of Ghana’s Chief Justice for a minimum of ten days.

According to a circular issued on August 13, 2025, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie stated that this arrangement would enable Justice Pwamang to oversee the judiciary in his absence. The scheduled period is from Monday, August 18, to Thursday, August 28, 2025.

The circular, titled ‘Absence from Duty’, noted:

“I shall be away from the jurisdiction from Monday, 18th August to Thursday, 28th August 2025. In my absence, the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court, His Lordship Justice Gabriel Pwamang, will act. Please accept my compliments.”

Justice Pwamang, a senior Supreme Court judge, currently chairs the five-member committee set up by President John Dramani Mahama to investigate petitions seeking the removal of suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. The committee was established in line with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and the Council of State’s recommendations.

What was meant to be a routine TESCON election at the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) took an unexpected turn when Kennedy Agyapong personally campaigned for one of the candidates. The student body, however, largely rejected his involvement. In the Women’s Commissioner contest, his preferred candidate was decisively defeated—students overwhelmingly voted instead for the contender aligned with Vice President Bawumia. The outcome reflected a strong student show of preference and signaled that high-profile endorsements carry limited weight in campus politics.
